Race starter Al Wilcox

Postby findgold » Thu Feb 03, 2011 10:25 pm

If you ever raced a mid-atlantic region WERA race there is a very good chance Al Wilcox Was the race starter.

I am figure that very few racers from this part of the country knew or ever ment Al. He was a man who lived for motorcycle racing. He raced at Daytona when the track was still part of the beach.

If you knew or knew of Al Wilcox I have some sad news.

Al Wilcox, Rest In Peace. January 4,1919 - February 3, 2011Legendary Motorcycle Race Starter and former Harley-Davidson factory racer from 1948-1951, AMA National #49, AL Wilcox, 92, "The Trenton Flash" from New Jersey passed away February 3, 2011 at 8:30 am at Capital Health Center.

From the Washington Post - Number 49 Al Wilco, 91, never tires of life on the racetrack

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 05063.html

This is a man that I will never forget. At the end of each race when you crossed the start finish line - be it first or last he waved that checkered flag for you in such a way that you felt as if you had just won the world championship..

Rest in peace Al Wilcox

Stop reading the obits. You'll never know when you'll find your own name there.

Sorry to have bummed you guys out..

I am old fat and slow. so my name could show up any day now...

It is a shame that none of you guys knew Al.. Although there are thousands of us that have roadraced back east who knew and loved the man and will miss him.

Again sorry to have bummed some of you out.
